Betrayal of Trust: Sexual Abuse by Men Who Work with Children... In Their Own Words

by Matthew Colton and Maurice Vanstone - £18.95  Free Association Books (1996)
paperback    ISBN 13: 9781853433573 | ISBN 10: 1853433578

Recent years have been marked by scandal after scandal about child sexual abuse. The most notorious and disturbing cases have included abuse by men entrusted to work directly with children. Yet this pressing topic has so far attracted remarkably little by way of serious study. This is all the more surprising given that those involved are the very people who, when they do sexually abuse, often attract dramatic and lurid media attention and bring a focus to the often inadequate levels of protection for children.

Matthew Colton and Maurice Vanstone carried out in-depth interviews with men serving prison sentences for sexually abusing children in their trust. All the men participated voluntarily, gave permission for publication, and expressed a wish to contribute to child protection.

Betrayal of Trust provides a detailed record of the men's stories - largely told in their own words - including their early life experiences; their sexual development, education and employment careers; how they perpetrated their abuse; and their experience of the prison-based treatment programme. The protection of potential victims of abuse, are also considered.

Matthew Colton is a seasoned researcher in the field of child welfare, Maurice Vanstone is equally experienced in working with offenders in the criminal justice system. They have combined their knowledge and expertise to produce this unique book, which throws light on the thinking and motivations behind abusive behaviour.

This is a timely book that will be of particular interest to a wide range of professionals and students, including those working in the social work and child welfare systems, teachers, probation officers and the police.
